After winning the toss and batting first, at first the New Zealanders struggled to get going against the spin attack of Ravi Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, as well as part timer Suresh Raina who all picked up vital wickets.

Eventually the team settled their overs at 7/126, which to everyone’s expectation was an easily achievable score for the Indian team. But to everyone’s surprise or should i say shock, team India couldn’t manage to beat such a low score.

Mitchell Santner picked up two wickets in his first over to restrict the hosts to a score of 3/12 after three overs. The pain didn’t stop there for India though, losing Kholi and nearly their entire side within the first half of the innings to be left hanging on at an astounding 7/43 after ten and a half overs.

Finally at the start of the 19th over with Adam Milne knocked all three stumps out of the ground to complete the comprehensive victory.

Spin was the order of the day in Nagpur as nine of India’s ten wickets fell to the turning ball, including incredible figures of 4/11 and 3/18 for Santner and Ish Sodhi respectively.

“I think it was a low scoring wicket, I thought we restricted them to a good total, the batting let us down, the shot selection kept putting pressure on the batsmen coming in … They bowled well, exploited the conditions, but we lacked adaptability, we could have applied ourselves a little more. The batting let us down.”

Mitchell Santner (Man of the Match)

“There was a bit of spin out there, they bowled well to keep us to 120, that was below par, but we got stuck in and I;m delighted with the win. Jadeja was really spinning it, starting was hard ..trying to get to 130 140 but in the end 126 proved to be enough.”

The match turned out to be a huge disappointment for all Indian fans, who were expecting a huge victory from the team, with Brandon gone and the inclusion of 3 spinners in New Zealand team, Indians were pretty much sure of their victory but as it turned out maybe Kane Williamson had studied the field better. Now Indian team will have to win all three of its matches to appear in semi-finals.
